With its vibrant orange berries enclosed in a delicate papery husk, they are both visually stunning and nutritious.
They taste like a cross between a gooseberry and a tropical fruit
I grow mine in a climate that is compared to USDA hardiness zone 8. Untll now I have grown the plants for seed, and it takes a long time until the leanterns fall of and the fruit is ripe. But it fully possible to get the fruit ripe in the northern climate. I have grown mine in fabric pots so I can take the plants indoors when the forst comes. I then take the plmats out next year in the spring.
My plan for next year is to take some cuttings before winter storage, so that I can have some “free” fresh seedlings early in the season.
One plant can produce up to a kilo of fruits, that are high in vitamin C.
Planting
They will thrive when planted in an area that receives full sun exposure. This perennial species grows well in warm conditions but should be shielded from extreme heat and frost to ensure a bountiful harvest.
Soil Preparation
Its a species that can be planted in various soil types. It is a part of the solanaceae family, and many people do not know that its a close relative to the tomao plant.
It thrives best in well-drained soil with a pH level ranging from 5.5 to 7.5. It’s essential to avoid overly rich soil as this can result in excessive leaf growth rather than optimal fruit production.
To enhance the fertility and drainage of your planting area, consider incorporating compost into the soil .
I try to use 50/50 compost and topsoil from my garden in my pots. I dont use any fertalizer and have had great results for all my plants.
The Importance of Good Soil
Before starting to grow, it’s essential to assess the condition of the soil in your garden. The best soil is a blend of mineral-rich dirt and organic matter. In my garden, I compost as much as possible to enrich the soil with nutrients. I use both hot composting for food scraps and cold composting for organic garden waste.
If you don’t have the time or space to compost, you can purchase compost from garden centers or use community composting programs. Learn more about community composting here: Learn more about community composting here.

Hot Composting bin
One insulated compost bin designed for cold regions is the Exaco Aerobin 400. It holds 113 gallons and doesn’t need turning thanks to its patented “lung” system. Plus, the built-in reservoir collects compost tea, which can be used as fertilizer.
The Exaco Aerobin 400 is available for $343.79. Check the latest price on Amazon.
Where I live I get a large tax refund every year for composting may own organic waste. Due to this saving I was able to break even on the cost at only two year use. I recommend you to check with your local government if you can receive any tax refund.
How to grow
If you choose to start from seeds, sow them indoors approximately 6-8 weeks before the last frost date for optimal results.
You can use this easy tool I have made to find your USDA hardiness zone and Typical last frost dates based on the zip code where you live:
The seeds are small can be a bit triky to see. What I have found to work is just to sprinkle them in a tray, and put them in indivudual pots when they have germinated.
To ensure successful germination, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged by using a spray bottle. Once your seedlings have developed into strong plants, it’s time to transplant them outdoors.
Make sure to space each plant about 24 inches apart in well-draining soil with plenty of sunlight. This step is crucial for their growth and fruit production.
Physallis is a perennial species native to Cape Peruviana and has golden lantern-like husks that encase delicious fruits.
These berries are organic and packed with nutrients when harvested at peak ripeness.
I got my best seeds form l local Facebooks seeds group, where I got seeds from organic home grown plants. Before I bought the seeds from the FB group, I had two failed germinating attempts with store bought seeds..
As mentioned I use fabric containers for my plants to have more flexibility. I also recommend you to use pots or containers of you live in a cold climate. In the winter the plants are stored inside my cellar where they only get small amounts of water( a small glass of water every other month), and no other special treatment.
Watering and Feeding
To ensure your perennial plants thrive, give them adequate water during the growing season. The leaves wilt quickly without it but beware of overwatering to avoid root rot. You can if you want try to boost growth and fruit production with a balanced fertilizer every few weeks. Watch for frost between harvests; sint the plants may need extra care then.
Irrigation Tips
Water management is important . Using a simple oscillating sprinkler in the early morning ensures water reaches the roots without evaporating too quickly. This method is great for home gardens. One option toconsider is the Eden Oscillating Sprinkler, priced at $17.94. It features 6 precision nozzles, a leak-proof connector, and a quick-connect mechanism to easily attach it to your garden hose.

The plant takes approximately 140 days to mature, that is well over four months. Once it has produced flowers, which are self-pollinating, you can expect the fruit to mature in 70 to 80 days, which is well over two months. It may be a low maintenance edible but it surely is one that tests the patience. If the fruit drops in its papery calyx/ lantern, the berries will continue to ripen after picking if it gets some heat and sun.
Care and Maintenance
- Ensure the soil remains consistently moist without becoming waterlogged.
- Shield your plants from frost by either covering them or bringing them indoors if needed.
- Prune to promote optimal air circulation and prevent diseases.
- Keep an eye out for common pests like aphids and whiteflies, addressing any infestations promptly.
Follow these tips to enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious lantern-like berries from garden beds or pots.
Harvesting
The berries are at their peak for harvesting when the husks transition to a golden brown, papery texture, revealing vibrant orange fruits inside. To enjoy these delicious berries, wait for them to fall down naturally or pluck them from the plant.
